During this year’s WWDC, Apple announced that iMessage would be able to sync across all iOS devices and desktops via Mountain Lion as cloud texting. This feature will make its way to Mac users next month. What you may not know is that there is an Android app that has been providing the same service for years that goes by the name of Zipwhip. Many of you out there may have never heard of the Zipwhip app but it has been around for quite sometime now.

Now Zipwhip is no fly-by-night company. They have offered their service via webapp since February 2009 and a full-fledged desktop app launched 3 months ago. Also they have over 6 million users as well as they have partnerships with various carriers providing pre-loaded texting apps like the cloud/group text messaging app that shipped with the last T-Mobile Sidekick.

Zipwhip provides a text messaging service that allows you use your current number to text from your desktop w/ no extra charges involved. The app doesn’t require the recipient(s) to have the app to receive messages. The desktop app works on Linux, Mac, or Windows computers. Zipwhip recently launched their app for Android tablets but the company is currently working on bringing it to the iPad as well. Android users can grab the app from the link below.
