Last week, we were fortunate enough to get invited to the 2nd annual GameStop Expo out in Vegas.  The 1st stop on the showroom floor was to visit the Xbox station to try out the next-gen console.  On display was Ryse: Son Of Rome.  This is a 3rd person combat in a sort-of free world environment that takes place in Rome (of course) during the days of gladiators who fought to the death as a spectator sport.  Let’s dive into the experience shall we?

The goal of Ryse is simply to survive.

  • The graphic were pretty life-like as Crytek’s CryENGINE powers the game providing great physics, speed, and accurate facial expressions when going for the kill or being killed.
  • You have your shield and sword to protect yourself and kill enemies.  You either slash your way through or finish your foes with a brutal yet great-looking fatality move.
  • I actually played a co-op demo where the two players can assist each other by reviving or completing tag-team executions.
  • Overall, the gameplay is fast and fluid.  This will make a great game for someone looking to explore a change in your everyday 1st person shooter or sports game.

Here’s some actual gameplay footage we took of the upcoming Xbox One launch title.
