Google gives the Hangouts app for iOS a big update ahead of their Android counterparts.  In v1.3.0, you get the new ability to make free voice calls through the app to US and Canada along w/ utilizing your Google Voice number to make calls as well.  Also new to the app, you can now send animated GIFs that play within your conversations and the app will turn down music you’re listening to rather than stopping it when you get a new message.  Ouch!  I know many Android users are seriously pissed off that they didn’t get it first but I’m sure Google will reward them next week w/ some great features built into Android 4.4.  Just hang in there.
