What seemed to be out of the blue, Google has sold-off the recently acquired Motorola Mobility to Lenovo. Lenovo paid almost as much as Google paid for Motorola: $2.91 billion.  The deal is broken down into $660 million in cash and $750 million in Lenovo shares.

Lenovo wanted to penetrate the US smartphone market and they just got a better means to do it.
Google supports Lenovo as they believe they can turn Motorola into a major player in Android.  As Lenovo now has Motorola’s 2,000 patents along w/ the brand including: Moto G, Moto X, and Droid series of devices.  Back in 2011, they bought Motorola and its mobile division + patent portfolio for $12.5 billion.   The acquisition is subject to approval but I think this will go through with no problems.
