Gotta love the speed and storage space of Blu-Ray discs, right?  Scientists think not and believe a higher standard can be achieved.  Thanks to the folks at Panasonic + Sony, say hello to the next-generation of optical storage: the Archival Disc.  More detail son why this is a big deal lies below past the break.

The Archival Disc is what you know about Blu-Ray on steroids!

Imagine a disc that ranges in storage from 300GB that’s readable for at least to 50 years.  That’s what Archival Disc is.  Crazy, right?  This is all possible thanks to Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology that’s a magnetic tape storage format.  The 1st line of Archival Discs will start off w/ 300GB and will later grow to 500GB then 1TB.  It will share many of the same dimensions of Blu-Ray but will offer 3 layers of data per side.

We can expect this high-storage discs to become available sometime in 2015.  Beware they will more than likely be really expensive at 1st.
