tesla model S D trim
Last night in Cali, Elon Musk unveiled something new coming to the Tesla Model S: the powerful D trim.  So you now have the choice of the standard 60, 85, or P85 along w/ the 60D 85D and P85D .  Set to arrive within the next few months, the D trim adds new features to the already awesome Model S.

The D brings you a dual-motor all-wheel drive system to the mix.  Turning what already had a strong acceleration even more robust.  Sporting dual motors that rest in-between the front and rear axles, it provides perfect balance as it is always adjusting output so the weights of the 2nd engine won’t weigh the car down.  This allows you to now go 0-60 in 3.2 seconds w/ 687lbs of torque.  Making it faster than a some Ferraris, Porsches, and high-end Audis.  But there is a slight trade-off being faster though.  You lose a bit of range as there is a 20 miles difference in far you can go w/ the D trim.

Meet the world’s 1st all-electric supercar.

Also new to the trim is the Autopilot feature.  This adds a variety of ultrasonic sensors and such to the vehicle to make it more intelligent.  Now don’t get all crazy as its not driving itself but pretty damn-close though.  With Autopilot the car can handle automated lane-switching, slowing or stopping when getting too close to other cars, and it can park itself.  Glad to see Tesla getting in on this automation stuff too.  They hope to have their vehicles to drive themselves one day.  It may be a while before that happens though.

We all know that Telsas aren’t known for being affordable for the everyday person…at least not the time being anyways.  The base model 60 starts at $70K as the P85D trim goes all the way up to just over $120K.  Being there are plenty of packages that you can add or take away as well.

So who’s going for a test drive?
