While this isn’t the 1st time we’ve heard that Google looking to get into the wireless carrier business, this is the 1st time we’ve actually heard of them making some traction to actually becoming one.  Previously there were reports of the search giant teaming up w/ Dish network to even Verizon to turn this dream of theirs into fruition.   According to the latest report by The Information, they may have found one.

Google will apparently look to Sprint + T-Mobile to make it happen.   They’re looking to buy wholesale access from their mobile data networks for its wireless voice + data plans.  Turning Google into an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) like Straight Talk, Virgin Mobile, etc.  Not quite the mobile carrier vision they’ve hoped for but its a start.

Don’t think of this as a faux pas at all.   This isn’t to completely take over the wireless industry but to incite change.  Like they did w/ Google Fiber which caused other ISPs to beef up their services to 1Gbps.   But that all depends on the terms of the deal w/ the 2 carriers to see how much Google will actually charge for voice/data services.

This is an interesting spin.  Curious to see what Google offers when it launches.
