IO 2015 Android M
Today at I/O 2015, we still don’t have any concrete evidence on the name (although there was a Milky Way Galaxy thing in the demo before the countdown).  We now have a lot more details on what M is all about.  Its not just all about refinement as it has its own goodies along w/ it as well.

Newer Android devices (more than likely the new Nexus device will have the most to offer utilizing Android M of course.  As they will offer even longer battery life by Dozing your device.  What we mean by Dozing , we mean intelligently powering down your device to increase your standby time.  This would trade-in faster app refreshing for a longer battery life. It will even faster charging thanks to USB-C ports and more than likely coupled w/ Quick Charge 2.0.

Android M is a lot more than just a simple refinement.

M will also offer up more control on what app permissions, app links to be baked in and of course fingerprint support.  We discussed this in our predictions that fingerprint authentication would be more baked into the OS and that’s exactly what happened. But it will coincide more w/ the new Android Pay platform coming later this year.  They’re focusing on 3 things: simplicity, security, & choice.  It will support in-app and tap-to-pay purchases on mobile devices.  They have over 700,000 merchants on-board already to accept Android Pay.  Devices like the S6 & Note 4 will have fingerprint support for Android Pay.

Up next is Now on Tap.  Think of it as Google Now on steroids or more accurately of Google Now being integrated into damn-near everything on your Android device.  For example: they used a convo in Inbox  talking about going to see the movie Tomorrowland.  You can just tap on the movie title and gets IMDB info, what theaters it will be playing at nearby, and buy tickets.  All w/o leaving the app you’re currently in.  This also works for dinner, laundry and countless other scenarios.

Android M developer preview will become available for the Nexus devices (5,6,9, & Player) later on today.
