blackberry classic review

When you think of the classic, you think of something that is timeless.  Something that will become a reputable part of history.  Perhaps even a game-changer of sorts.  That's what BlackBerry did w/ their Bold line. It was the pinnacle of their company for that time and years to come.

We're about half way through 2015 and we've been testing BlackBerry's latest Classic device modeled completely after the Bold but running the latest BB10 software.  We're not here to assess if the Classic is for you or not.  A BlackBerry in 2015 would be more for specific consumers or certain members of the enterprise.  We want to focus more on that to make sure that it lives up to its classic name.  Let's get started w/ it, shall we?

Classic [klas-ik] 1. of the highest quality, class, or rank.

The BlackBerry Classic is a living homage to the high-point of their marketshare.  It is comprised of a rubberized, textured rear that makes holding it a breeze.  You should have no problems holding on to this phone w/o worrying about dropping it.  The Power button is on the top of the device and the volume rocker is on the right-hand side.  In-between the volume up + down lies a new smaller button that activates the Assistant app.

Classic [klas-ik] 2. serving as a standard, model, or guide.

The screen on it offers a 3.5inch touchscreen LCD display w/ resolution of 720 x 720.  The touchscreen is good and responsive.  Its not going to replace any of the 1080p or 2K displays but it is adequate.  Inside lies a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage expandable via microSD card.  The processor works well enough for everyday tasks.  When you start getting into gaming, it starts to show its age & inability.  For a day-in-and day-out situations, it will be good enough.  The QWERTY keyboard experience on a smartphone is pretty much extinct right now.  But that doesn't mean Blackberry still can't make great ones.  It has a 35-key back lit QWERTY keyboard.   It's been a while since I've had to type on a physical keyboard for a phone.   After having to bang out a few sentences, I was back like I never left.  BB still nails it in the category.  All-day.

Classic [klas-ik] 3. basic, fundamental.

The Classic is running the latest OS w/ Blackberry 10.3.  So instead of just having Blackberry World for you to choose your apps from, you know have the Amazon App Store as well.  This helps out BlackBerry w/ the app section immensely to just having their own app store to peruse from.

The games section is where Blackberry benefits the most from as this bring a lot more familiarity to choose from.  In regards to everything else, its better but still can be a hit-or-miss.  Some of the popular apps still crashed or had problems operating like GroupMe and other new-age productivity apps.  Luckily you can sideload apps along w/ a version of the Google Play Store to keep you up-to-date w/ your app needs.

Blackberry is one of those companies who's never been great at making cameras but they've done a better job than this.  On the rear lies a 8MP camera which requires a ton of light to get a usable photo.  Same goes for the 2MP front-facing shooter.  In moderate lighting, you'll have to deal w/ a slow shutter speed as it takes way too long to capture a photo.  I was hoping this part wouldn't be a classic but it is.

And lastly, the battery life.  This is one of the areas where BlackBerry never had any problems and continues to do so. Underneath the rear lies a 2515 mAh battery.  I can easily get over 15 hours w/ regular usage and over 2 days w/ light to moderate usage.

BB Classic review grade

If this had the specs of the BlackBerry Passport inside while retaining the Bold shell, this would be more of an actual Classic.

TG 2 Cents

I was a die-hard BB user for many users as it was my trusty smartphone after the Sidekick and before the G1 came into town.  Just before TGSB got started.  In 2015, it would seem as if the smartphone market has no room or need for BlackBerry to continue to exist.  Never the less, they're still out here still creating great phones for those who need to get things on-the-go.  They're not trying to pull users away from other platforms as this is more for the diehard fans & those who love QWERTY keyboards.

So does this Blackberry live up to the name of Classic?  Close but not quite so.  If this had the specs of the BlackBerry Passport inside while retaining the Bold shell, this would be more of an actual Classic.  More of a true BlackBerry for today's standards instead of those of 2010.  That's what kept it from being great.
