Yesterday, Google made hands-free calling from the Google Home official as the update began rolling out.  This news was announced back at I/O this year as we saw it in action a few times since then.

‘OK Google, Call The Wife!’

Google is really using the Assistant side of things tied to your phone to make these phone calls.  You would make calls as you would normally and just talk through the speakers.  You’ll be able to make free calls to those on your contact list along w/ tons of businesses as well with the US & Canada.

Here are a few things to note:

  • Unfortunately, if you’re not using Google Voice or Project Fi, your number will come up as spam or unknown.  Google is looking to fix that later this year.
  • Google got the one-up on Amazon as you can only call from one Echo to another as this can make actual phone calls.
  • Google Home now supports multiple users so if all users are setup correctly, it can identify which user is talking and access their contact list.
  • Hands-free calling via Google Home doesn’t support incoming calls.
  • You only can make one phone call at a time so now 3-way calling.
  • Lastly, 911 isn’t supported as of yet so I hope you aren’t in any danger trying to use this now but it is coming.

So who’s excited to start using this feature?  Let us know if you got the update or not.
