iPhone 11 Pro Max: Review After The Review

As Apple’s WWDC or WorldWide Developers Conference is right around the corner, we’re expecting to get updates to iOS, mac OS, tvOS, watchOS, HomeKit, iPad OS, and more. We thought it would be an opportune time to revisit the iPhone 11 Pro Max. Especially since this was my 1st iPhone since the 5s. Now that we’re about 9 months since its release, its time to review the 11 Pro Max after the review.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max offers a kind of frosted glass on the rear w/ glass on the front as well as a matte finish and stainless steel frame underneath it all. It definitely has some heft to it as it feels a bit on the heavier side of things.

The dual stereo speakers get pretty loud w/ good quality. It has lovely features like 3D-like spatial audio as well as support for various Dolby products like Sound, Vision, & Atmos. It’s good but not as full or punchy as the Pixel 4 or LG V60 though.

Now onto one of my favorite parts of the iPhone 11 Pro Max: the display. The biggest panel gets me as close to the larger QHD Android panels I’m used to. The 6.5inch OLED panel is dubbed a Super Retina XDR display as Apple calls it w/ 2688 x 1242 resolution. Although no fast refresh rate here or can handle 4K on the panel, it produces excellent color accuracy thanks to Apple’s True Tone tech as well as HDR content too.

When not reviewing other phones, this is my main media device for watching YouTube, Netflix, as well as Spotify for music + podcasts. This is also the main device I play Call of Duty: Mobile on damn-near nightly. The bigger iPhone 11 Pro handles amazing – even many months later. This isn’t Android that relies on tons of RAM to run smooth and its one of things, I missed. This is all thanks to their own A13 Bionic processor inside along w/ their Neural Engine, coupled w/ 4GB of RAM, and the 64GB storage size I opted for makes for flawless performance.

Now the Plus or the Max version of the iPhone always grants you the benefits of a larger screen & battery. But for the 11 Pro Max, the battery is easily the best on any iPhone. This is thanks to their larger L-shaped 3969 mAh battery inside that they had to remove the 3D Touch technology for. I average about just under 5 hours of screen on time Monday to Friday and about over 3 hours on the weekends. Still can get me about a day and a half of juice w/ heavy usage and 2 days w/ light-to-moderate usage on a single charge.

When it comes to the iPhone, its all about the powerful hardware, ease of use, amazing cameras, and that Apple ecosystem.

The cameras on the latest iPhones are easily the best – compared to previous iPhones & other devices. The shooters on the iPhone 11 Pro Max still retains the amazing versatility w/ its f/1.8 12MP main, f/2.0 12MP telephoto, & the f/2.4 12MP ultra-wide.

The main and the ultra-wide sensors pulls off amazing imagery w/ superb details, a great level of sharpness, true-to-life color accuracy, and close to Pixel low-light performance. Apple’s Night Mode can go head-to-head w/ Google’s Pixel and works a bit better as it works automatically. I actually preferred the quality of the telephoto on the Pixel 4XL over the 11 Pro Max but they got the assistance of their machine-learning software. However, I rarely used the telephoto though.

Now onto the video side of things, the iPhone 11 is king! You can record up to 4K @60fps and slow-motion up to 1080p @120fps. The image stabilization is really good as well as it gets close to handheld gimbal-level. You can use this to start your YouTube channel, b-roll footage, & more. The LG V60 is the only device that comes close to the video quality here. Still amazing to this day.

  • Face ID is still fast & effective.
  • The system-wide Dark Mode for iOS 13 is nice!
  • Siri is just there she only gets activated by accident.
  • Notifications & in-line messaging are still sadly behind to what Google has done w/ Android.
  • The easier ways to edit via cut/copy/paste isn’t as good as Android.
  • QuickType swiping on the keyboard is fine.
  • 3D Street View in Apple Maps is cool.
  • The new Reminders app is dope but barely used it.
  • Loving the in-app photo/video editing tools also.

The iPhone is still the de facto smartphone to get for most people & keeps getting better.

So we didn’t find anything wrong or anything lacking on the iPhone. Just want them to drastically improve they handle notifications. Outside of that, this thing is just about perfect. All-day battery w/ fast-charging, fast performance, top-of-the line cameras for photos/videos, and the best versions of apps present. I’m not waiting for Apple to switch from Lightning to USB-C. It will come when it comes – if it actually does.

While we’re only a few months away from the iPhone 12 launch and you’re looking at picking one up, you won’t be disappointed. Especially as you can save some $$ on this one and being only a generation behind, you’ll still get the latest features/software that Apple has to offer. If you have a iPhone 11, 11 Pro, or the 11 Pro Max, how are you loving yours and how’s yours holding up?
