RPGs are one of the biggest game genres out there as we love immersing ourselves in cool universes and taking on different roles. Within this genre, you have multiple subsets. There are open-world RPGs with more fluid combat and those with more turn-based systems. Regardless of your preferences, here are the top 5 RPG games of 2023 – including some upcoming releases!

Final Fantasy 16

Final Fantasy 16 is the latest in a long line of instalments from one of the biggest and best RPG franchises of all time. The series started out as a turn-based RPG but pivoted to a more open combat system. In Final Fantasy 16, you have some of the best combat yet with great sword melee action and a range of magical powers. The world is what makes this game special – traverse through worn-torn lands and experience a variety of creative enemies. It’s a great game that’s easy to pick up and has a long story.

Starfield

Starfield is poised to be one of the hottest RPG titles of 2023. It releases sometime in September (barring any delays) and takes you on a massive journey throughout space. When gameplay was revealed at the latest Xbox Games Showcase, it blew our minds. Made by Bethesda, it combines the wonderful RPG mechanics of Fallout and Skyrim with the open-world planet-hopping brilliance of Jedi Survivor or No Man’s Sky. Definitely a game to look forward to in the coming months!

Honkai: Star Rail

Honkai: Star Rail is a hugely popular Japanese RPG gacha game with a turn-based combat system and a massive swarm of characters. It became a viral sensation when first released earlier this year thanks to a thrilling storyline and great game mechanics. Unlike a lot of gacha games, the Honkai: Star Rail material drop rate is really decent, so you can kit your characters out in loads of skins and get a ton of cool weapons.

Diablo 4

After a rocky start when released, Cyberpunk has developed into a top RPG title with loads of customisation and a great playable world to explore.

By all means, there are loads of amazing RPG titles out there worth playing. Although not released in 2023, Elden Ring always deserves a mention as the undisputed game of the year in 2022. One thing’s for sure, RPG fans are set up for an exciting few months.
