During Microsoft’s secretive press event earlier today in Hollywood, the Redmond-based company unveiled their Windows 8 tablet with the Surface. Invites of the event went out last week with very little details on what it could possibly be pertaining to. There was plenty of speculation throughout the weekend of Microsoft teaming up with Barnes & Noble or the company launching a 7inch Xbox media tablet. They put all of those to rest with the Surface tablet.
The Surface tablet offers enough to cover all bases of comfort, style, & input. Sporting a 10.6inch ClearType HD display w/ Gorilla Glass 2 coating and a 16:9 aspect ratio for ideal media viewing. The screen can read both stylus & finger inputs for navigation. The Surface tablet has a very slick Vapor-Mag coating that gives a magnesium light finish comparable to a luxury timepiece as well as making it extremely lightweight. The tablet comes equipped with a built-in kickstand on the rear that doesn’t affect its size and a 5mm touch cover that doubles as a Bluetooth keyboard for your typing needs.
The Surface will arrive in two forms: Windows RT & Windows 8 Pro. The Surface running Windows RT will be powered by a NVIDIA Tegra processor, weighs 676g, is 9.3mm thick, comes in 32GB or 64GB storage sizes, and has ports like microSD, USB 2.0 & micro HD video. The Windows 8 Pro Surface will use a newer Intel Core i5 processor, weighs 903g, is 13.5mm thick, comes in 64GB or 128GB storage sizes, and has ports like microSDXC, USB 3.0, & mini DisplayPort video.
The tablet will ship with the full Office suite, Xbox Live, and Netflix pre-loaded. Hopefully we can get some developers to help make this ecosystem into something. Time will tell. No word yet on pricing or availability but expect the Windows RT Surface to launch along with Windows 8 while the other one is slated to arrive 90 days later. I can’t lie.
