For those of you who are uninitiated, MoviePass is a subscription pass that lets you watch as many movies as you want for what you would pay for Netflix per month. It was previous around $50 per month but as of yesterday, dropped down to $10. This is in part due to Helios & Matheson Analytics, Inc acquiring a majority stake in MoviePass.
MoviePass will work w/ bigger theaters like AMC & independent ones as well.
The $$$ is preloaded to a debit card and is tied to your smartphone via the MoviePass app (available on both Android & iOS). You can watch as many movies as you want in a month but only at one movie per day though. MoviePass is currently available in over 4,000 American theaters and more than 36,000 screens.
Here are a few things to note though:
- MoviePass will work will reserved seating.
- The service will only work for 2D screen, not 3D or IMAX.
- You won’t be able to buy tickets online via Fandango as you would have to go the theater early to pick up tickets.
- MoviePass is connected to your phone so if you wanted to hand off the card to a friend, you’d have to give them your phone as well.
- The service won’t allow you to watch the same movie twice.
- There are no blackout dates as you can movies the day they premiere and Disney films are not excluded.
- There are no annual contracts as it is on a month-to-month basis so you rock out for a month, quit, and then pick it back up when a movie you’ve been waiting for hits the screens.
You can see where MoviePass works at a theater near you here. Now that it’s a bit more affordable you can stop bootlegging movies & go back to the theaters. And w/ the $$$ saved, you can buy concession stand food now.
So who’s going back to the movies regularly?
