Nintendo’s president clarified during speaking with corporate investors that their next-gen gaming console will not have the ability to play DVD or Blu-Ray discs. He states:

Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities. The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.

Nintendo is not arming their new console with playback abilities to lower the cost of manufacturing, which will make it cheaper for you: the consumer. While this news may bum some of you out, keep in mind the original Wii sold quite well compared to its competitors also without DVD/Blu-Ray playback. Is this a deal-breaker for you or is their new controller intriguing you enough to still purchase?
