We are rapidly approaching that time where the news feeds will become flooded with leaks/rumors of new iPhone details as the official announcement draws near.  The leaks and specs have already begun sprouting around the web with the rumored launch of sometime this fall.  While it is hard to tell what Apple’s new iPhone will offer exactly, we do have an idea of where they are going with it.  Let’s highlight the ups and downs of what we know thus far.

“Loving the new look but the iOS 6 so far seems boring.”

The iPhone You’ve Been Waiting For (Hardware)

Based on the prototype that have been leaked out, something will finally change is the hardware behind the iPhone.  The current iPhone (and the previous model) resembles a work of art as in beautifully crafted and made of glass.  Sporting the same 3.5inch display w/ 960 x 640 resolution, 512MB of RAM, powered by a dual-core A5 processor, an f/2.4 aperture 8MP camera, and the virtual assistant in Beta called Siri.

The next-generation iPhone is said to offer a slightly larger/taller display measuring at 4inches w/ a possible 1136 x 640 resolution, 1GB of RAM, LTE radios on-board, as well as NFC support.  Rumors place the A6 processor as a possible quad-core or an even faster dual-core as the accompanied chipset.   Apple looks to have changed the way to construct the iPhone by replacing the glass back with a next-gen metal unibody.  Also moving the 3.5mm headphone jack to the bottom of the device along with using a new, smaller 19-pin dock connector as opposed to the current 30-pin one.  The aforementioned hardware changes brings a new breathe of fresh air iPhone users have been waiting for.

“Google’s mobile OS has matured in a way many iOS users are still waiting for.”

The Let Down Part (Software)

During the Apple’s WWDC event this summer, the company unveiled a preview of the next version of iOS expected to arrive on the new iPhone.  Apple added many notable new features like Facebook integration, native turn-by-turn navigation, more Siri functionality, a digital wallet called Passbook (hinting at NFC abilities coming), and FaceTime over 3G to name a few.  While these are all but mostly welcomed, the overall look of iOS looks the same.   The same icon placement, lack of widget support, and no new UI changes.

Which is truly a shame now that Android’s previous update Ice Cream Sandwich and now with Jelly Bean, offered a complete redesign of the general UI, look, & layout of the Android OS we once knew.  Google’s mobile OS has matured in a way many iOS users are still waiting for.  As a recent iPhone adopter, I along with many others would have loved to see iOS get a visual makeover along with its new tricks.

With the leaked images showing us new hardware, their iOS 6 thus far is more of the same thing.   With the new build, a refresh on the software side of things would go hand-in-hand to further wow consumers and continue pushing the envelope.  Loving the new look but the iOS 6 so far seems boring. I know recent surveys showed that many consumers have already decided that they will pick up the new iPhone.  I hope Apple’s commercial release of iOS 6 offers some visual changes rather than the same look it has had (more or less) since its launch back in 2007.

Nothing is absolute but when Apple sends out the invite for their Fall announcement, all will be put to rest.   With all of the information revealed, are you one the consumers already sold on the next iPhone?  Do you need more features or are you leaving iOS to go to newly matured Android?   Let us know your plans in the comments.
