Well today was the day many of you have been waiting for.  Apple’s big event event to unveil the next iPhone and they did.   With the official title being the iPhone 5, it was mostly everything previous rumors/leaks said it would be.  The sixth-generation iPhone has a redesigned body along with beefier internals to outperform its predecessor.

On the outside:

The i5 is sporting a taller 4inch display w/ 1136 x 640 resolution (326 ppi) and a 16:9 aspect ratio.  The display retains the same width as it is taller for more content along with adding a fifth row of icons.  The body is constructed out of glass in the front and an aluminum unibody on the back that helps make it thinner & lighter.  This new iPhone is 7.6mm thick (18% thinner than the i4S) and weighs 112 grams (20% lighter than the i4S).   The infamous 30-pin charging port has been redesigned into a smaller 8 or 9-pin port called Lightning (to compliment Apple’s Thunderbolt).   Also the infamous Apple earphones have been redesigned as well as they are now called Ear Pods.  They are made to fit most ears as well as to send sound directly into your ear.

On the inside:

Apple is using a single LTE chip that supports HSPA+ as well as the new A6 processor (could be quad-core or faster dual-core, not yet confirmed) that offers double the speed & graphics of last year’s A5 chipset.  With the new LTE support, Apple beefed up the battery to support a suggested 8hours of LTE browsing & 3G talk-time.  That will have to be truly tested.  The new i5 has an improved f/2.4 8MP shooter on the rear that offers enhanced noise-reduction, smart filter, better low-light shots, the ability to take photos while recording video (like HTC’s ImageSense), and panorama mode all within a sapphire crystal lens cover.  The front-facing camera is now a FaceTime HD shooter that takes 1.2MP pics and records video in 720p HD.

The iPhone 5 now has 3 mics for HD voice calls, improved speaker, and a noise-canceling earpiece.  Also inside is a 2.4GHz & 5GHz dual-band radio for faster speeds via Wi-Fi.  The i5 will of course run iOS 6 which will offer over 200 features.   The free software update will become available on September 19th as it is compatible w/ the iPhone 4S/4/3GS, the new iPad/iPad 2, and the 4th generation iPod Touch.   So those locked within a contract can still enjoy some of the newer features.

Apple will begin taking pre-orders on September 14th and it will ship beginning on the 21st.   Pricing is standard with the 16GB for $199, the 32GB for $299, & the 64GB for $399 on contract.  The i5 will be available in Black & White and is coming to AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon.

So who’s getting one?
