Point-And-Shoot





The newest Canon consumer shooter, the ELPH 100HS offers a great variety of features to make sure you don’t miss a moment. armed with a 16.1MP, 24mm wide-angle lens w/ 5x optical zoom, capable of 1080p HD video, HDMI out on a 3inch LCD touchscreen display. The ELPH series by Canon are great everyday consumer cameras as I own myself.

Sony has crafted the most powerful pocket camera with the RX100.  Armed with a 20.2MP, f/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens w/ 3.6x optical zoom that offers a larger sensor than your average point-and-shoot.  Giving this pocket shooter DSLR image quality.  The RX100 can also record video in 1080p HD @60fps.  With a $648, this isn’t for the amateur photographer.  
Mirrorless


For anyone looking to graduate from a point-and-shoot but don’t want the bulk of carrying around a bigger DSLR, mirrorless cameras are the way to go.  The NEX-5R offers a 16.1MP, 18-55mm lens, a tiltable 3inch LCd display, and capable of recording video in 1080p HD at 60p/60i/24p.  You can buy other lenses and swap if the shot calls for it.  This Wi-Fi enabled shooter can be picked up for $648.  
Although the name is a bit of a mouthful, the E-M5 is quite the shooter with DSLR results and a retro-style body. Equipped with a electronic viewfinder, a 16MP sensor w/ fast auto-focus system, 3inch tiltable touchscreen LCD and a weather-proof body.  Pricing starts at $1,050 depending which kit lens you go with.  
DSLR
The latest in Canon’s EOS T series digital SLR, the T4i is the best thus far.  Full of Canon’s latest goodies like a 3inch touchscreen LCD rotating display, 18MP sensor, a 9-point auto-focus system, and continuous auto-focus while recording HD video.  Ideal for those looking to take more professional photos.  Starts at $800 depending on what kit lens you pick up.  
The most recently announced full-frame DSLR by Nikon gives you the D600.  This Nikon offers a 24.3MP sensor, 39-point auto focus system, pro-level HD video recording, and two card slots.  Especially from professional photographers looking to upgrade their hardware will definitely want to check this shooter out.  You can gift one for just under $2,500.  
If $$$ is no object check out the Canon 5D Mark III (for $3,300) or the Nikon D4 (just under $6,000).
