Earlier this evening, Sony unveiled what everyone has been waiting for: their next-generation console or the PlayStation 4. We went from rumors/leaks to the official announcement and boy was it a long one. Sony hopes the PS4 will push boundaries and stimulate innovation with the developers.
As rumors suggested, inside of Sony’s new console is powered by a 8-core x86 64-bit AMD Jaguar processor, 8GB of RAM, a next-gen AMD Radeon GPU, a 6x Blu-Ray/8x DVD drive, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, USB 3.0 ports, and a local HD storage. The new console introduces an entirely new user interface for PSN users. Sony made sure to give the PS4 always-on status. You put the console to sleep and boot it back up at the same place you left off.
Older PS3 Discs Aren’t Allowed
The next-gen console gaming trend appears to have the ability to download new games instead relying on only discs. The good thing about that is that you can start playing PS4 games right away while the rest of the game continues to download. The bad thing about this is that older PS1, 2, & 3 games can only be played by streaming them fron the cloud via Gaikai technology.
Sony made some changes to the standard PlayStation controller to now do even more. Meet the DualShock 4 controller. The new controller has a slightly redesigned analog joysticks, a touchpad, a 3D stereo camera for tracking PS4 controllers, a light bar w/ 3 LED colors, 1000 mAh battery, and a Share button to upload gameplay videos and sharing via social networks. And BTW, the PS4 have a secondary chip just for uploading with an always-on video compression. You also have a PS4 Eye Camera w/ a 4-channel mic and 2 f/2.0 1280 x 800 cameras for PS Move functionality.
PS Vita owners can use it with the PS4 as a second screen a la Wii U. Also smartphones and tablets can be used as a second screen via Sony’s PlayStation app for Android and iOS.
Sony announced a few titles that will be available at launch like: Bungie’s Destiny, Deep Down from Capcom, Diablo III from Blizzard, Driveclub, a new Final Fantasy, Infamous: Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Pitfall, and Watch Dogs.
Although Sony didn’t actually show off the PS4 and announce pricing, but the new console will be out in time for 2013 holiday season.
