Fresh from off of the UPS truck comes the latest BlackBerry device. After some waiting, we finally got a BlackBerry Z10 courtesy of AT&T. For most of the day of spending some quality time with it, I decided to share my initial thoughts with you guys. Next week is the big US launch as AT&T and Verizon pre-orders have already begun. Below are my thoughts on what to expect when you unbox yours.
- The Z10 has a quality look and feel to it. Not too heavy, not too light. Just the right size & weight. The plastic back door has a nice textured finish for a nice grip.
- The 4.2inch 720p HD LCD display is pretty good. On some HD content it shows its age behind the 1080p HD display. HTC has spoiled us.
- The Z10’s performance is on par with current flock of devices as it is armed with a dual-core S4 processor. Snappy and responsive. No sense of lag what so ever.
- The 8MP camera is definitely one of the fastest experiences I’ve seen to process. The camera’s Time Shift mode is a game-changer. So much that other companies like HTC and Samsung are using a similar method of capturing a few frames before & after the photo. BlackBerry’s camera software offers an array of editing tools & features to make up for the lack of Instagram.
- While there is no dedicated hardware or software for audio, any sound coming from the speaker is crisp and clear.
- The first day of battery life didn’t go so well. Powered up and running by 11AM and completely dead by almost 8PM. I hope to fare better with more testing the 1800 mAh battery.
- The new BlackBerry 10 OS is easily their pride and joy. After spending a short amount of time with it, I can definitely appreciate it. The gestures of BB Flow becomes natural after a bit. Even though I want to press the BlackBerry logo. Android has me looking for a Home button. BB Hub is a great idea of having one central place for all of your communication needs. I wish I could delete multiple emails/messages instead of one at a time. Not perfect but good nonetheless.
- The browser on BB10 is like a more powerful & revamped version of the PlayBook’s browser. Don’t sleep, the PlayBook browser was fast and supported a lot more than other platforms. Nice!
- The BB10 is easily one of the best touchscreen keyboards I have used. From touch sensitivity to auto correct down to the predictive type is ideal for short texts or long emails. This alone makes up for the Storm series.
- The Voice Control is super-beta, like Samsung’s S Voice. Functional when you are heard correctly. I have a deep voice so a lot of wrong commands are being heard.
- I have yet to test the new BBM but expect it to be covered on the review.
