With every major tech company seemingly following the smart watch phase, innovation and timing is key.  This is something Nike knows all too well.  Many of you may not know this but the famous sports company was working on a new-age eyewear many years ago.   Fast Company recently did a profile on Nike and the scoop.

Nike would’ve beat Google to futuristic eyewear…by several years.

The concept was called ‘Magneto’ and it wouldn’t have been a wearable computer like Google Glass but more of a innovation of eyewear.  ‘Magneto’ would allow athletes to tape magnets to their temples and add new eyewear to them.  Nike was looking replace the use of headbands, googles, etc for all athletes.  They had some testing them during races and everything.  There were positives with many downsides as they decided to scrap  the idea.

However years later, Nike went to attack the idea of another wearable product and were a bit more successful with it.  This time around their goal was to replace the sweatband.  Perhaps you’ve heard of the FuelBand?  The innovative band has proved to be a top-selling product that’s easily ahead of its time.

But we will never know what ‘Magneto’ could have been or how it would have changed the tech landscape.   But one can wonder.
