Out of no where, Google just acquired Nest Labs for a total of $3.2 billion in cash.  Nest labs is responsible for the learning thermostat and smart smoke + Co2 Protect alarm.   The company was created by Tony Fadell, who was responsible for designing the original iPod & other Apple products who left the company to start Nest in 2011.

Late last year, screenshots leaked that Google was working on their own Smart Thermostat system called EnergySense.  So that means Google has been eyeing Nest for a while and this acquisition makes a bit more sense now.  Fadell and the rest of the Nest company will continue to operate as their own entity after the acquisition is complete.  The deal of course is subject to regulatory approvals  before becoming truly official.
