There is quite the rumor going around that 2014 could be the last year of the Nexus-brand line of device by Google & selected manufacturer.  According to Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, we can expect a new line of Nexus device this year but that’s it.  If this actually comes to pass, consumers would still get the latest version of Android ahead of carrier-branded devices.  The Play Editions were only 2nd or 3rd behind the Nexus and Motorola’s devices to get the newest updates
.

Google’s Nexus program is possibly out and Play Edition is in for a 2015 substitution.

This move would force tinkers to go for Play Editions or Developer Editions of select devices.  The Play Edition line of devices was announced last year and has grown quite fast.  Now offering 5 devices at your disposal w/ the GPE HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia Z Ultra, LG G Pad 8.3, and strangely but lastly the Moto G.

I’m hoping this doesn’t happen but if more Play Edition devices are released, it would question the current purpose of the Nexus program.  What do you think about this?
