At yesterday’s big iPad event, there one little notion that Apple didn’t highlight – their new SIM cards. Apple has never really been a fan of them and would love to eventually do away w/ them. Now w/ all major carriers utilizing SIM cards, including the CDMA ones who now use them for LTE networks. Apple now has their own custom SIM card inside of their new iPad Air 2 + iPad mini 3 which is a bit of a game-changer.
What makes the Apple SIM so unique is that it is reprogrammable as carriers + data pricing packages can be changed through software at ease. The Apple SIM will still be removable but for those who buys their new iPad from a carrier, it will still be the same old locked SIM that we are all used to.
Very interesting approach to a new type of SIM card. I wonder will the carriers catch on as LTE gets faster and more bands become compatible.
