Everyone’s favorite DVD/Blu-Ray/gaming kiosk, Redbox, is about to hit us w/ a small price hike. According to the folks over at the Wall Street Journal, the change in pricing is due to wanting to purse new technology + a sluggish bottom line. So in order to keep profits up and continue to innovate, pricing will go up by 25%. So starting on December 2nd, you can expect to pay $1.50 per night for a DVD rental and $2.00 for Blu-ray. Its still cheaper than renting a movie via download from Amazon or iTunes. Video game rentals are going up too. Effective January 6th, they will cost you $3.00 per night.
Since Redbox Instant streaming got shut down last month due to no one using it, the company is looking to pivot a bit. They have renewed deals w/ many of their content partners and are looking into creating a Netflix-like recommendation feature when looking for a movie for the night/weekend.
So what’re your thought on Redbox charging a bit more starting next week?
