project-ara-spiral-2
The last time we talked about Project Ara, they just released their MDK (modular development kit) + showed off 3 sizes of their modular phones.  Yesterday was their Developers Conference as they let us know that Ara is getting really close to launch.

They unveiled the Spiral 2 which is their latest phone that will be close to the one available at launch.  This sports a 1280 x 720 display, slots for dual processors like Marvell’s PXA1928 + NVIDIA’s Tegra K1, a 5MP camera, 3G + Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth support.  The battery is on the smaller side so don’t expect it to last as long as the Note 4 or Droid Turbo.  They hope to have 11 modules ready for purchase at launch w/ a total of 30 by year’s end – which includes an improved camera + LTE support.   Since it’s not a high-end Android device out of the box, you can swap out modules to turn it one.

Google did announce that Puerto Rico will be the 1st place Ara will launch as a test market.  No word on pricing or availability as of yet.   Now that its getting closer to becoming a reality, what do you think about how Ara is shaping up?
