Sonos revelaed their new speaker but its a reimagining of their very 1st one they released back in 2009 w/ the PLAY:5. This has been redone to fullfill the vision of Sonos w/a new type of speaker offering up more sound & to be better futureproof.
Sonos wants to remind everyone what great Hi-Fi audio sounds like.
The new PLAY:5 has been buitl from the ground up as its not just a simple refresh but a redesign. It touts not 5 drivers but 6 this time around w/ 3 tweeters and 3 mid-woofers. It now has a polycarbonate grill that can sit either horizontally & vertically as it knows which way is up to pump out the sound. These new speakers are said to be a louder and punchier than previous models as I look forward to testing it out.
No more physical buttons on the speaker as Sonos has gone w/ capacitive touch sensors. These can still start/pause playback, adjust the volume, and skip back/forward tracks as well w/ a swipe. The new PLAY:5 is priced at $499 which is $100 more than the old PLAY:5. Sonos assures us that it is worth every penny as it is set to arrive later this year.
Also new to the party is a new feature called Trueplay. It makes sure that you get optimal audio no matter where the speaker is placed in your home. For example: it won’t sound like crap when you place a speaker in a corner or on shelves. Trueplay only works on iOS for now but it uses the mic on your iPhone or iPad as a calibration tool to tweak the settings so audio will sound the same way no matter where you place it.
The Trueplay feature isn’t just reserved for the new PLAY:5 but it will work on all of the current PLAY:1, 3, & 5 speeakers as well. And just like the new PLAY:5, Trueplay will arrive later this year.
