Among the many announcements at I/O 2016 yesterday, Google’s take on Android VR was unveiled and will be officially called Daydream. This will be their official virtual reality platform for all things Android.
Cardboard goes to version 2.0 w/ Daydream.
Daydream will be built to support Android N w/ a VR Mode created inside fo the OS. By doing this, this optimizes the device performance to better run a higher-end VR. It has a reference design as you can see in the image above but has a remote control for navigation & gaming that is similar to the remote for the Nexus Player.
We can expect 3rd party companies to create the actual headset hardware like others has done w/ different Cardboard designs. Samsung, HTC, Huawei, LG, ZTE, Asus, Alcatel, and Xiaomi are all on board to create hardware as Daydream will work w/ current-gen devices too.
FYI: don’t think the Google Play Store will be cluttered as it will have its own section for VR. Daydream is coming later this year, more than likely within the fall like damn-near every other announcement from I/O 2016 this year.
