Many would say that Google's Wear OS has been slacking lately is due to an outdated processor. More specifically, their older Snapdragon Wear 2100 CPU hasn't been the best for smartwatch battery life. If your smartwatch is dead before your phone, it is not gonna be worth the $$$.
Yesterday, that all changed - hopefully. Qualcomm revealed their new Wear 3100 CPU to improve in the areas their weak in. So the new CPU is supposed to beef up the battery life, improve always-on displays, and keep up w/ additional fitness sensors. This is all thanks to a new coprocessor that uses 20 times less energy than the main processor. This will also handle most of the processing when your watch is in ambient mode. The interesting thing is the main processor is the exact same as the 2100 chipset.
It will offer various modes to handle different types of tasks to better handle everything. So you got Enhanced Ambient Mode, Sports Mode, & Traditional Watch Mode. With Enhanced Ambient Mode, you get a smoother second-hand movement, up to 16 colors shown at once, & live complications all utilizing adaptive brightness. Sports Mode offers up to 15 hours of battery w/ continuous GPS & heart rate monitor use. And Traditional Watch Mode brings you a mesh of previous 2 modes but lasting even longer. Like up to 30 days on a full battery and a week w/ 20% of juice.
Looks like newer watches from Fossil, Montblanc, & Louis Vuitton coming will be armed w/ this new processor. Now, this is what I'm waiting for. Actual great battery life for Android-powered Wear OS smartwatches. This is similar to back in Android's early days when the battery life was terrible for the most part.
So does this info make you want to buy another Android smartwatch or nah?
