After seeing what plastic OLED looks like on the original Galaxy Fold & the new Razr, it was refreshing to hear the Samsung utilized ultra-thin glass for its 2nd folding phone: the Galaxy Z Flip. But recently, after everyone scattered to find one due to its limited availability due to quantity, the new materials might not be more durable than we thought it was.
Yesterday, YouTuber JerryRigEverything put the device through its durability test and the results weren’t for Samsung’s benefit. The ultra-thin glass didn’t fare well w/ that or his heat + puncture tests. The glass was just as susceptible to scratches as plastic was. It looks like it may not be glass at all but some sort of glass-polymer hybrid which is misleading.
Samsung reps responded to The Verge by saying the ultra-thin glass is present for a premium look + immersive viewing experience and should be handled w/ care as there is a protective layer on top of the glass. Samsung will offer a one-time replacement for $119 as well as a one-time screen protector at ‘select’ Samsung & UBreakiFix locations.
It is to be noted that the Z Flip is more durable that the original Fold but just not what Samsung says it is though. This would explain the limited availability as they have yet to fix the durability on their folding displays. But to be fair, they are the 1st ones out but they’re gonna have to get a handle on it eventually or just stop releasing folding phones.
