Peak Design Everyday Backpack Zip: My New Favorite Bag

Yeah, 2020 hasn’t been a great year w/ all of the sucky things going on in the world right now.  From all of the deaths to coronavirus going around cancelling just about everything.  I didn’t even make it to CES or any other tech event thus far for the year.  But the reviews ain’t stopping though.  I’ve spent about the end of last year and this year w/ one of the latest from Peak Design on my back.

I have loved the original Peak Design Everyday Backpack and was one of the bags I’ve always go back to it as my go-to-bag.  So at 1st glance, the 2nd-generation of bags look like a mild update but there is a lot more in using them.  So along w/ the new line up of bags they got a few more additions into the mix.  One of them is the Everyday Backpack Zip – which is the Everyday Backpack but swaps out the MagLock for a zipper enclosure.   The folks over at Peak Design sent over the 20L size model and its my new favorite bag right now.  Let’s dig into why, what I carry in it, and all that it entails.

FYI: you can roll up some clothes to carry in it as well but I've used it strictly for gear.

So for the most part, it retained a lot of what they used for their previous bags.  This means you have a weatherproof construction made of poly-coated nylon canvas shell w/ a waterproof liner on the bottom, a luggage pass through, a sternum strap, 2 deep pouches on each side, a 270-degree ultra durable zipper to hold it everything in, a 2-cord hook system to add more to the outside of the bag – all comprised of 100% recycled materials.

On the inside, you got 2 (not 3 from the standard Everyday Backpack) customizable FlexFold dividers for storage that can create many compartments, a total of 3 internal slip pockets, a quick stash pocket for your phones/documents, a smaller pocket for smaller items, a sleeve for your tablet, and a protective sleeve for your laptop (a 15L can hold up to a 13inch one & a 20L can hold up to a 16inch one).  I loved the implementation of it and used it to comfortably carried all of my gear inside as well as whatever it was I was reviewing at the moment.  You can check out everything I’ve been lugging around in my bag below.

Sony a6300

AndyCine A6 External Monitor

MacBook Pro 15.4inch (2015)

Sony WH-1000XM3 Headphones

Sony Camera Remote

Since I shoot just about all of my reviews by myself, this saves time by just being able to record and review footage/shots w/ just a press of a button.  No more having to go run up to the camera and look and then start again.

Anker 26800 mAh Battery Pack

I’ve upgraded my battery pack to probably the last one I’ll need.  The latest big boy from Anker is heavy at 1.6lbs but the power brick offers a massive 45W 26,800 mAh battery w/ 60W wall charger that can fast power phones, tablets, & laptops – yes laptops.

Rode Wireless Go

These have been my go-audio solution for videos since I picked these up.  Easy to clip on, plug in, and get started recording with.  The 7-hour battery does me wonders as I probably only charged these like twice since picking this up.  Most of my videos are about 10 mins before chopping it down in post.

The latest 6.5inch iPhone has been great to me – especially being the 1st phone I’ve purchased in a very long time.  It’s great for media, photos (including Night Mode), the best for video, the best versions of apps, and even great for phone calls.  I’m still getting over 24-hours of battery life – probably closer to 36-hours.  This depends on how much I play Call Of Duty Mobile that day.

The latest Pixel is still my main phone and still my go-to-for photos.  The feature drops continues to make it more interesting and fun to use.  The Face Unlock is holding up well but I think Face ID is just a hair faster for me but not bad.  Still don’t rally use Motion Sense but it does come in handy the very few times I do.  Hopefully they upgrade that battery life for the Pixel 5.
