Last night, Qualcomm unveiled a new chipset that will help give budget Android phones the power of 5G. Introducing the next-generation 600 series CPUs w/ the new Snapdragon 690 processor.
The new 690 chipset will offer 20% better CPU performance + 60% faster graphics rendering compared to their 675 chipset. So along w/ the 5G speeds, the Snapdragon 690 will get support for 120Hz displays, 4K HDR video capture, and enable up to 192MP camera on devices.
Now this will give 5G to more devices but there will be a trade-off of sorts. Don’t expect this to support that faster mmWave 5G that Verizon uses though. Since that still building out and not quite everywhere like that, it won’t be a huge loss. This would mean the VZW will only be able to see flagship 5G phones until that changes or a new CPU comes to fix that.
The good thing is that you won’t have to wait too long to see them in action. You can expect the 690 to be on devices from HMD, LG, Motorola, Sharp, & TCL sometime during the 2nd quarter of this year.
