The year 2023 is heading towards its 4th quarter and we haven’t got our annual GoPro update – all of that changes now. Earlier this week, they announced the GoPro Hero 12 Black, their newest flagship action camera. The $399 price point and design remains the same while the paint job and its abilities receive welcome updates.
First and foremost, GoPro redesigned their power management system which the company touts double the battery life from the Hero 11 Black. This also applies for longer runtimes for continuous recording, but these claims only apply when using GoPro’s Enduro battery and not the standard one. So the stock GoPro battery life would be less but how much would have to wait for real-world testing.
The Hero 12 Black can shoot HDR photos and videos at 5.3K@30fps and 4K@60fps. They’ve added a new vertical 9:16 mode for TikToks/Reels/Shorts content and added Bluetooth wireless audio support to use AirPods and mics w/ your Hero 12 Black. Also new, is GP-Log encoding to grab more dynamic range for color grading and timecode sync to better match up different angles in post.
GoPro finally gave the the front a splash of color w/ a speckled faceplate in its signature Blue color. Another long awaited feature they added a regular tripod mount at 1/4inch 20 thread at the bottom so no more needing an adapter to do so. As well as now being able to edit videos from the cloud instead having to transfer them from your GoPro – for GoPro subscribers. They’ve brought along a new $100 Max Lens Mod 2.0 accessory to help your capture more area of footage w/ 177-degree field of view in 4K@60fps. Granting you 36% wider and 48% taller field of view.
The new GoPro Hero 12 Black will go on sale on September 13th. And like previous years, GoPro has a Creator Edition kit that offers adds a grip, a media mod w/ mic, and LED light for $600.
