Hard to believe that the Pixel Buds A-series is four years old, and since technology for earbuds has improved dramatically, Google is taking advantage of this opportune moment to benefit from today’s advancements. Outside of the newest Pixel phones and watches, today Google also unveiled an update to its aging, value-focused earbuds: the Pixel Buds 2a.
The Pixel Buds 2a resembles a mesh of the Pixel Buds Pro 2 (internals) and the Pixel Buds A-Series (design and price), which merges to hopefully provide the best of both buds. The earbuds have an IP54 rated shell, which can handle dust and splashes but not be completely submerged in liquid, while their charging case offers an IPX4 rated coating, which is similar to IP54 but lacks any dust protection.
Google brings over the custom and powerful Tensor A1 CPU from the Pixel Buds Pro 2, which specializes in solid noise-canceling abilities, handling Gemini AI requests, and fast audio processing. Each bud is equipped with an 11mm dynamic driver, two mics, an infrared proximity sensor, capacitive touch sensors, and wind-blocking mesh covers. Its mics help your voice sound clear when using Gemini hands-free for directions, controlling music playback, and more.
Unlike the original Pixel Buds A-Series, ANC (or Active Noise Cancelling) is present here. With ANC on, Google quotes the Buds 2a for up to 7 hours of juice and 20 hours in total with its charging case, and with ANC off, Google quotes the Buds 2a for up to 10 hours of juice and up to 27 hours with the charging case. And like the Pixel Watch 4, the batteries in the Buds 2a charging case are now replaceable. No other previous Pixel Buds case could be fixed without being completely replaced.
The Pixel Buds 2a are available for $130, and come in Hazel and Iris color options. Pre-orders begin today, and they will go on sale on October 9.
