luke-cage-netflix-1On Friday 12AM PST/3AM EST, Luke Cage season 1 dropped on Netflix.  Some of you knocked it our right away, some took the entire weekend to watch it, and others are still in the process finishing it up.  If you still finishing up, you might want to leave and come back when you’re done for potential spoilers.

Here are my thoughts on it:

  • I, being a Black man, did appreciate Marvel’s (and the showrunners) take on authentic Black culture.  The music arrangement was phenomenal as well.
  • Mike Colter nailed as Luke Cage.  From personality to stature to everything, this is the quintessential Luke Cage.
  • I absolutely loved Frankie Faison as Pops.  I reformed enforcer turned Uncle Ben-like character for Luke for great.  He wasn’t in it long enough for me.
  • I loved Mahershala Ali’s take on Cottonmouth.  Of course, he wasn’t a physical adversary for Luke but still a good one.
  • Simone Missick as Misty Knight did her damn thing as well.  I wanted to see her do more throughout the series.
  • I liked Alfre Woodard as Black Mariah too.  I feel like she didn’t get her chance to really shine a villain while sharing that space w/ Diamondback.
  • Theo Rossi as Shades was ok.  It seemed like they didn’t really know what to do w/ his character.
  • I didn’t really care for Diamondback at all.  I think that Erik LaRay Harvey did the best he could but the script turned into an atypical cheesy villain in a sense.
  • The plot/script didn’t seem to be built well enough for a full 13 episodes.  After episode 7 when one villain left and another stepped in, the show took a nose dive for me.  The final fight scene was the most boring thing ever seen.  Really lackluster.

For me, it wasn’t my favorite Marel Netflix series as a whole.  It had a phenomenal start but didn’t finish strong at all.  But I’m not expert, I’m just a comic book fan running tech site.  What do I know?

For those of you who finished it, what were your thoughts on the latest Marvel Netflix series?   What did you love about?  What didn’t you care for?  Sound off in the comments and let us know.
