Google finally makes good on its promise to update the Android OS for Google TV with Android 3.1.   The company admits that the initial launch OS for the TV service wasn’t the greatest but have learned from it.   Google TV now shoots to go hand-in-hand with cable/satellite services instead of attempting to compete against them.   The new update offers more than just apps & access to the Android Market, consider it a redesign from the ground up.

Android 3.1 hopes to give Google TV new life with new interface coupled with a new customizable home screen that shows you all of your apps for quick, easy access.  The new update also offers users an improved way to search for content via apps, Internet, or Live TV along with a redesigned YouTube app that turns any searchable topic into a viewable channel.  And last but not least is the arrival of the Android Market on your GTV.   What you can expect from it is video-content apps, apps designed for GTV, and regular apps retooled for a bigger screen.

The new update will begin rolling out for the Sony devices starting early next week and the Logitech devices not too far behind.  Google TV isn’t quite done yet, they will also announce more updates, more devices, and more partners to continue moving this thing forward.   Glad to see Google making this work rather than abandoning the project altogether.
