Earlier today is when Google held their press event on what they have planned for their popular Maps app.    The small event took place in Sans Francisco and had several new tricks to add to its sleeve of abilities.  The biggest bit of news is the fact that Maps will soon offer Offline Mode where users can still get directions/navigate even when they are somewhere without data signal.   Complete with the pinch-to-zoom option and Street View.   Nice!

Google Earth will get 3D mapping with great resolution in the near future as well.  Google uses automated technology that renders 3D from aerial images.   Which looks good.

Both apps are expected to arrive in coming weeks for both Android & iOS (even though Google will soon get dumped as native Maps provider for next version of iOS).  Check out some video on the 3D maps courtesy of Google below.
