Announced earlier this morning, GM will be switching up cellular providers for their vehicle wireless services next year.   The previous provider was Verizon but AT&T struck a deal with OnStar (a GM subsidiary) to provide most of Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicles with their LTE service. This is currently the new trend  within the automotive industry as BMW and Audi made similar announcements recently.
AT&T’s LTE will power OnStar’s safety/security services, apps + media streaming as part of their infotainment suite, and in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot + voice calling services.  The APIs for developers were already made available during AT&T’s Hackathon during CES to make apps/web services car-compatible.  Interested buyers can expect the new wireless services in GM vehicles in US and Canada starting in 2014.  The near-future is getting more and more interesting.
