Now we move from smartphone cameras to full-fledged cameras.  

Canon PowerShot ELPH 320HS

There is still those who seek out a great point-and-shoot for a more portable shooter.  Canon’s Power Shot ELPH series are always a great go-to shooter.  The 320 HS offers a variety of features/specs to cover a wide range of needs.  Offering a 16.1MP sensor + f/2.7-5.9/24mm wide-angle lens, 5x optical zoom, hybrid image stabilization, 100-3200 ISO, powered by a Digic 5 image processor, and a 3.2inch touchscreen LCD display.   This is a silent beast in your pocket for photos.

Recording video at 1080p HD, the 320 HS is priced at $160 on Amazon.

Sony CyberShot RX100

The next step up is the high-end point-and-shooters.  This one is from Sony w/ the RX100.  This compact shooter offers a 20.2MP sensor w/ f/1.8 Carl Zeiss lens + 3.6x optical zoom, ISO range from 100-25,600, 3inch LCD display, powered by their BIONZ image CPU, manual control, JPEG + RAW support, 1080p HD at 60fps.  Just a step down from mirrorless, the RX100 can cover more than your average point-and-shoot.

Samsung NX 300 

Don’t think Samsung specializes only in smartphones, they can craft great cameras too.  The NX300 is a great mirrorless camera w/ a great faux leather build for a classic feel that produces quality photos.  Offering a 20.3MP CMOS sensor w/ 20-50mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, ISO range from 100-25,600, Wi-Fi connectivity, HDMI out on a 3.3inch AMOLED touchscreen display. Ideal for shooting pretty much everything as it has a hotshoe for added flash or shotgun mic.

Sony NEX-6

Sony’s second high-end mirrorless shooter is the NEX-6 under the 24.3MP NEX-7.  A lightweight & powerful performer that can create documentaries, movies, or YouTube videos.  Sporting a 16.1MP APS-C sensor w/ f/3.5-5.6 16-50mm power zoom lens, powered by the Bionz image processing CPU, 3inch LCD display, Wi-Fi connectivity, and OLED viewfinder.  It is small enough to expand by attaching an L-bracket, ring light, & shotgun microphone.

Canon EOS Rebel T5i

Canon’s latest prosumer DSLR is a great step up from a point-and-shoot that offers a slight upgrade from the T4i.  The T5i is equipped w/ an 18MP APS-C CMOS sensor, powered by the Digic 5 image processing CPU, ISO range from 100-25,600, continuous shooting at 5fps, and records 1080p HD video.  Those of you picking up one w/ the kit lens, you get the STM feature that offers a silent, steady auto-focus and keeps it continuous when recording video.

Nikon D5200

Nikon’s prosumer DLSR that launched at the top of the year made it to picks of shooters.   The D5200 sits in the advanced beginner as it isn’t targeted for entry-level photographers.  Using a new 39-point auto-focus system, the D5200 offers a 24.1MP DX CMOS sensor, ISO from 100-25,600, continuous shooting at 5fps, powered by a Expeed 3 image processing CPU, stereo mic, and a 3inch rotating LCD display.  A great shooter for the traditional photographer.
