Not that this a big surprise at this point but Microsoft really wants you to become a Xbox Live Gold member in case you aren’t already. With all of the new features being pushed out w/ the Xbox One, it makes sense that a Gold membership be required – and an annual one at that.
Without it you can’t take advantage of the next-gen console’s features like Game DVR, NFL on Xbox, Skype, SmartMatch (improved matchmaking), and OneGuide (a TV guide that allows you to browse/control live TV).
