While may of you may expected to see the return on Clippy, you will get a real assistant from Microsoft.  Those of you familiar w/ Halo (Master Chief’s AI + sidekick) please don’t expect it to behave like Cortana in real-life.  We obviously aren’t there yet.  More on Cortana’s abilities + features below.

“Apple has Siri, Google has Google Now, & now Microsoft is getting ready to show you theirs.”
Former Microsoft CEO Ballmer noted details on it in a strategy memo back in July as he said this:

“Our UI will be deeply personalized, based on the advanced, almost magical, intelligence in our cloud that learns more and more over time about people and the world. Our shell will natively support all of our essential services, and will be great at responding seamlessly to what people ask for, and even anticipating what they need before they ask for it.”

Like the fictional character, WP’s Cortana will have the ability to adapt and learn using voice commands according to ZDNet‘s Mary Jo Foley.  The service looks to support weather information, notifications, events, location information, and access to Bluetooth + Wi-Fi controls.  But that’s the just beginning as Foley’s contacts say that service will eventually expand to Windows and the Xbox One as well.

Looks like the company is getting ready to pull the trigger on its virtual assistant.  Apple has Siri, Google has Google Now, & now Microsoft is getting ready to show you theirs.  Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8.1 w/ Cortana on-board is set to get revealed early next year.
