Today, AT&T acquisition of Leap Wireless became official. Leap Wireless is the company that owns and operates Cricket. With the new brand and celluar service, AT&T is looking to grow its prepaid business and also rebrand. Cricket has a pretty substantial presence in the prepaid marketplace and AT&T is looking to capitalize on it.
Aio, AT&T’s current prepaid offering will be rebranded and turn into Cricket as soon as possible. If you are currently and Aio Wireless customer, nothing is going to change for you. The only difference will be names and logos changing across currently the Aio website. The plans and network will all be staying the same.
However, if you a Cricket subscriber, changes are on the horizon. AT&T has said that as soon as the convergence is made Cricket subscribers will need to go into stores and get all new phones as your service will be moving over to AT&T’s network. This actually is a good thing as far as quality of service and data speeds go. No word on what will happen to the Cricket plans.
It will be interesting to see how all of this shakes down. Cricket is known for their reasonably priced unlimited plans. It is highly unlikely that AT&T keeps those around down the road. But we will see how it goes. We will definitely keep everyone posted about any news we hear on this situation as the merger continues.
