Meet Sony’s 1st look into their vision for true immersion for gamers: the Project Morpheus virtual reality headset.  Sony took to the stage at the 2014 Game Developers Conference to unveil what took 3 years in the making to get to this point.  While the headset you see above is just a prototype and NOT the final version of what the commercial release will look like.

Sony looks to step into the arena to challenge the Oculus Rift in virtual reality gaming.

The Morpheus sports a 5inch LCD panel w/ 1080p resolution + 90-degree field of view, a 1000Hz refresh rate that connects via HDMI or USB.  For those of you who own other PS accessories, it can use the PS camera for tracking & the PS Move for motion control.  Dev kits for Morpheus will be wired although the final product will be wireless.

On the stage, Sony demoed Morpheus playing titles like EVE: Valkyrie, a supported version of Thief, the Deep, and the Castle.  Sony already teamed up with developers like Crytek and Epic Games to create games for the new VR headset.

Of course, no word on how far out we can expect to see it hit the market.  We’ll keep you guys updated as the news comes in.
