No matter what device you use on a daily basis, you’re gonna eventually have to run for the charger. Whether it be an iPhone, HTC One, Lumia 1520, iPad, or Nexus 7. At some point and time, it’s gonna run out of juice. For some smartphone owners there are battery cases. For other who either prefer their phones naked or better protected, you’ll have to seek an alternative option: the way of the battery pack.

As part of their new line of battery packs unveiled at CES this year, TYLT’s Energi packs are made to ensure you and your products stay juiced. I’ve been testing TYLT’s new Energi 5K+ for a few weeks now. But I was really able to test it out during our venture the press preview for the NY Auto Show as it was an all-day event out in NYC.   I’ll break the internals and details about the device before letting you know how well it held up throughout the day. No video this time, so let’s dive in it.

Design/Build

With TYLT, always expect their products to stand out a bit (whether massive or subtle). The 5K+ is a pretty slim battery if I do say so myself. It’s the perfect size to place into your pockets or your purse. The battery’s body sports a plastic build and rubber charging arms. Speaking of the charging arms, it has a built in micro-USB + Lightning cable along w/ a USB slot for a third cable of your choice.

DSC00473Also the battery utilizes a Power button that has a LED light that lights up in different colors to show the battery life. Bright Green for full, blinking Green for just under full, Yellow for halfway, and Red for close to dead. The colors display when turning the battery on/off like other TYLT products.

Battery Life

Inside of the Energi 5K+ lies a 5200 mAh battery w/ a 3 Amp circuit that allows you to charge 3 devices at once. Or just 2 devices while the 5K+ is charging. The 5K+ itself takes about 6 hours to fully charge. In about just over 2 hours, it can charge both my iPhone 5 and Galaxy S5 simultaneously to full capacity as the 5K+ turns Red. So if you only have 1 device, you’ll easily get 2 & half charges out the 5K+. Definitely great size & power on the go.

TGSB TYLT Energi battery review

“The 5K+ is ideal for anyone who frequently carries multiple devices.”

TG 2 Cents

If you aren’t familiar w/ TYLT and their line of products, they’re an accessory company that offer a more unique design to standout among the crowd of Otterbox, Speck, etc. The 5K+ is another example of it. The great thing about TYLT’s Energi battery packs are that they’re not device specific. If the built-in charging cords for Android + iOS devices don’t work for you, you can plug in the desired one into its USB port. Make sure the 5K+ is fully charged before leaving the house of course.

To Buy Or Not Buy

The 5K+ is ideal for anyone who carry multiple devices. Whether you have a personal phone + business phone or phone + bluetooth speaker or phone + tablet. This is a must buy at $90. For everyone else: if you need power on-the-go and you’re not into battery cases, this is an option to consider.
