Earlier today, DJI announced a new camera, that’s right, just a camera. This time around there is no drone attached but a handheld, professional 4K camera. If it isn’t the same as the one on the Phantom 3 Professional drone, its pretty close to it.
Introducing the Osmo: a 4K camera capable of 12MP photos w/ a Sony Exmor 1/2.3inch sensor + a 94-degree field of view on a pistol grip gimbal stabilizer. It can also record slow motion at 120fps in 1080p as well as panorama photos. It has an onboard universal mount that has a smartphone holder along w/ working w/ other accessories like a tripod, bike mount, or extension arm. As far as the sound department goes, it has an on-board stereo mic along w/ a 3.5mm audio jack for adding external mics and such.
The grip has a record button, a joystick to controlling the gimbal manually, and a toggle switch to change the operating mode of the gimbal. The smartphone holder on the grip is necessary as a viewfinder so you see whatever it is you are recording. Making this a serious piece of filmmaking or YouTube equipment.
The Osmo is upgradeable to use the other cameras from DJI’s drone line like the one from the Inspire I or the new Zenmuse X5 shooters and future cameras from the company. The DJI Osmo will cost you $650 and will begin shipping on October 15th.
