Yesterday, Samsung unveiled their newest flagships for the 1st half of 2016 w/ the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.   We didn't make it out to MWC 2016 out in Barcelona but we were able to get some hands-on time in NYC.

  • The always-on display doesn't take up the entire screen and since Samsung utilizes AMOLED panels, they can light up just a portion of it w/o eating too much into the battery life.  This is an area we will definitely have to monitor closely for the review.
  • Samsung made sure to add the rear curvature from the Note 5 & 6 Edge + to the S7.  All to make it fit in your hand a lot better than before w/ a more nature grip rather than holding a flat slab of metal in your hands.

  • We got to test out the water-resistant abilities as well.  Being IP68, it can sit in up to 5ft of water for 30 minutes.  Definitely feels good to have an all-metal device that you can be a little less cautious with.  Still don't drop it though.
  • We didn't' get a chance to really demo their Dual Pixel technology they borrowed from Canon DSLRs as it was nothing but sunlight and time constraints.  But we were able to see the new auto-focus and see how fast it can focus when shifting between subjects and such.
  • They also added a sort of Live Photo feature to their Panorama photos as well.  While I do not partake, those of you who do will definitely enjoy it.
  • No USB-C but you now have fast wired & wireless charging on-board along w/ the same single, bottom-firing speaker grill.

From the specs alone, we dubbed it the perfect mesh of the S5 and the S6 and after handling it for a little bit, we stand by our statement.  This is great for those of you still rocking the Galaxy S5 as either one of these will make for a great replacement.  We are working on procuring a review unit as we speak.
