Earlier today, Google announced a much-need update on Project Ara – and it is a good one. For you w/ short-term memories, Ara is the 1st modular phone concept from Google. Many thought it might have been a wrap but low and behold, it is coming.
What you see now is their newest prototypes as it shows off how the device has evolved since it was originally unveiled. Definitely a lot cleaner and a base w/ 6 slots for module-swapping including CPU, GPU, antennas, sensors, battery, and display.
Ara is using a new latch system to lock the parts in tightly as they connect through Google’s Greybus software. Greybus works w/ Android that allows for data transfers of up to 11.9Gbps and instant connections w/ the modules for hot-swapping. Now to detach the modules, you can either do it via the app or say it, “OK, Google, eject blah-blah module.” They can be sported w/ new textures/finishes to really customize it.
Developer units for Ara will be available in the fall while the consumer model will arrive next year. No word on exactly the timeframe for a 2017 launch. Ok, I am definitely ready for Ara. Are you?
