We previously heard rumblings of Google prepping to drop their preview for the next version of Android & it happened. Earlier today, Google dropped their 1st developer preview for Android P. And giving us all a better taste on what to expect for their new vision for their mobile platform.
Here are some of the new changes arriving for Android P, according to the 1st preview anyways:
- For starters, we got notch support. But not just any notch, several different kinds from tall to narrow to wide and so forth.
- Next, indoor positioning via Wi-Fi RRT (Round Trip-Time). This utilizes Wi-Fi access points for more accurate location when using Google maps inside of a mall or large building.
- Then we got the one change most will be waiting to use: even better notifications for messaging apps. So now you will be able to utilize Reply for messaging as well as see more of the conversation so you can see the thread of what the convo consisted of.
- Power Menu adds screenshot option. Also w/ screenshots, you can do more editing within their native Markup app where you can crop, draw, etc.
- The Volume Menu moves to the right side of the screen.
- Slightly updated Pixel Launcher.
- Clock moves to the top left corner to make room for the notches.
- New icons for Quick Settings, notification shade, and full settings.
- Text zooming.
- Do Not Disturb is now separate form the Volume control.
- HDR video support for YouTube, Google Play movies, etc.
- Enhanced Doze, standby, & background limits for better battery & power management.
You can only grab it on the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, or Pixel 2 XL. The Nexus 5X, 6P, & C just got cut off form the latest Android updates. I've heard about some of the bugs that you may deal w/ this alpha build of Android P. So if you feeling froggy enough grab it, make sure it's not on your main phone.
