Well, after years of rumors & speculation, it finally happened. Sprint & T-Mobile will finally merge as the big US carriers go from 4 down to 3. Why now might you ask? It’s all about joining forces to offer more speeds & technologies as we move from 4G to 5G speeds.
The merger is an all-stock one as Sprint would be absolved into T-Mobile. The base of operations will be in Bellevue, Washington. John Legere will be the CEO, Mike Seivert will be the new COO & President, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure & Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son will sit on the company’s board. T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom will grab 42% of the company & Softbank will grab 27% of it.
By joining forces, the 2 companies hope to lower pricing and offer better competition against AT&T and Verizon. Together, they have almost 100 million subscribers as they will be the ones get the fruits of their labor of next-gen 5G deployment. But of course, the merger still needs to be approved by regulators and the company’s shareholders.
If you remember, AT&T attempted to buy T-Mo in 2011. The failure of the deal gave T-Mo $$$ for more antenna space which gave them legs to gain subscribers & blow past Sprint as the 3rd place carrier. Then Sprint attempted to buy T-Mo back in 2014 and things got quiet yet here we are.
So how do you Sprint or T-Mobile subscribers feel about all of this if this goes through?
