As NAB 2019 is going on and a slew of announcements, Canon dropped a new camera w/ the EOS SL3.  A relative surprise for the most part.  Not the camera itself but the new addition of 4K video on this smaller shooter.

4K video on Canon’s Rebel series but not w/o its caveats.

But before you get super-excited, there are the atypical limitations w/ 4K on Canon’s consumer shooters.  It is cropped down to 1.6x and loses Canon’s Dual-Pixel AF to use a lower contrast-detect AF.  Oh and no in-body image stabilization either in 4K.

Outside of that, we got a 24.1MP APS-C sensor, powered by Canon’s DIGIC 8 image processor, continuous shooting @5fps, DualPixel AF w/ 9 AF points, built-in Wi-Fi and a rotating 3inch LCD screen for vlogging.  You got a microphone jack for capturing audio but no HDMI for monitor/other accessory support.

Despite its imperfections, this might be a great camera solution for you and your needs.  But not if you want to get the best 4K video though.  However, the Canon SL3 will arrive later this month for $600 for the body and $750 w/ a f/4-5.6 18-55mm kit lens.

Will this be your new B camera or even your 1st camera?  Let us know.
